A tape of the “Acid Tracks” was hammered by Ron Hardy in the Music Box in 1986 and became one of his signature tunes. Released in 1987 on Trax, it immediately set off a whole new style in Chicago. New York too produced slick and soulful sounds, as the likes of David Morales and Roger Sanchez entered the house music arena. Big room house became increasingly popular since 2010, through international dance music festivals such as Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, and Electric Daisy Carnival. In addition to these popular examples of house, there has also been a reunification of contemporary house and its roots. Many hip hop and R&B artists also turned to house music to add a mass appeal and dance floor energy to the music they produce.

Throughout his career, Afrojack created his own record label Wall Recordings. The song charted in 10 different countries and continues to be one of the leading songs for the influence of dance music in today's mainstream pop culture. As it was for many DJs who came of clubbing age in the ’70s, it was the Loft—the revolutionary NYC club run by David Mancuso—that sealed the deal for Tony Humphries.“That’s what flipped my life around,” he’s said. “I had been Mr. Church Boy up till then, but the Loft turned me out.” And it turned him out but good—by the early ’80s, Humphries had a both a pioneering mixshow on KISS-FM and a residency at Newark, NJ’s influential Club Zanzibar. Later in the decade, when house began to hit in the tri-state area, Humphries was there to guide the sound. Despite all the divergences, there were always large sections of the clubbing world that were dedicated to straight-up, no-messing-around house music.

Hinged on an explosive loop of stuttering, multi-tracked vocals, this 1986 classic brought the thrill of robotic machine-funk to a wider audience after its release on seminal Chicago label Dance Mania. Released in 2006, when house was being drowned out by the sounds of amped-up electro, the totemic figure of Larry Heard quietly dropped this magisterial piece of vocal-acid treasure. It’s been a DJ favourite ever since (for everyone from Ellen Allien to Julio Bashmore) thanks to its pulsing bleeps and plaintive vocal vibes.

Always the ideal soundtrack for “grown folks’ dances” or getting down in the sunshine at a festival, bubbling with positivity and empowerment with a bittersweet undercurrent of struggle and heartbreak and a little bit of sauce, it’s the heart and soul of house. In Detroit during the early and mid-1980s, a new kind of electronic dance music began to emerge around Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three. The artists fused eclectic, futuristic sounds into a signature Detroit dance sound that was a main influence for the later techno genre. During the 2010s, multiple new sounds in house music were developed by DJs, producers, and artists. Sweden pioneered the "Festival progressive house" genre with the emergence of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, and Steve Angello. While all three artists had solo careers, when they formed a trio called Swedish House Mafia, it showed that house could still produce chart-topping hits, such as their 2012 single "Don't You Worry Child", which cracked the Billboard top 10.
This past year was a big one for her on the release front with her fun and flirty track “Favorite Song,” while also landing on In/Rotation’s Rotate Vol. 5 with “Talk To Me.” Insomniac Records clearly has her on their radar as she was invited to perform at EDC Las Vegas on the stereoBLOOM stage. Bob Sinclair is a French DJ and music producer who has been active in the House music scene since the 1990s. He is a pioneer of the genre who has been DJing, producing, and performing across the globe for decades now. One of his most popular songs is “Love Generation,” which was a hit in many countries around the world.
Their music takes elements of 70s disco and 80s crooners to create records that have garnered critical acclaim across the globe. The pair reached No. 2 on Mixmag’s ‘Greatest Dance Acts of All Time’, and placed No. 28 in DJ Magazine’s ‘top 100 DJs of 2011’ list. Daft Punk are hugely well-known French house artists that did an exceptional job of integrating their music into the mainstream. With house influences from the UK and Detroit, as well as a keen ear for production, influenced by the likes of Dr Dre, the duo made numerous slick entrances into the charts. Robert Owens encapsulates everything there is to love about house music.
Tech house became the sound of vast events from Buenos Aires to Beijing, and of course the superclubs of Ibiza and of the pristine beaches of Tulum. Many bass music acts – Skream and Solardo most notably – crossed over and became huge names in a new style. Patrick Topping with his 2014 hit “Get Beasty” has gone from breakout to star in his own right, proving that while tech house may be significantly more banging and played in bigger arenas than when it emerged in London, its momentum is unstoppable. Like deep house, tech house means many things to many people, and its definition has changed repeatedly over the years. But it began as a distinct scene in mid-‘90s London, led by old guard acid house names like Mr. C, Eddie Richards, Terry Francis, Nathan Coles, and Layo & Bushwacka!.
Avicii was a Swedish DJ/artist known for his hits such as "Hey Brother", "Wake Me Up", "Addicted to You", "The Days", "The Nights", "Levels", "Waiting for Love", "Without You", and "I Could Be the One" with Nicky Romero. Fellow Swedish DJ/artist Alesso collaborated with Calvin Harris, Usher, and David Guetta.[123] In France, Justice blended garage and alternative rock influences into their pop-infused house tracks, creating a big and funky sound. Now even music’s biggest stars have paid tribute to house music pioneers. As well as Beyoncé Drake’s seventh album, Honestly, Nevermind, draws on contemporary dance music sub-genres such as Jersey club, Baltimore club and South African amapiano; and Kanye West’s 11th LP, Donda 2, draws on the genre in a more veiled manner. He founded the popular Knee Deep in Sound label and is dedicated to uplifting underground house music. Some of his popular songs include “Buggin’,” “Restless,” and “Therapy.” Hot Since 82 is known for creating groovy deep house tracks that keep fans moving on sweaty dance floors across the globe.

Armand Van Helden and Basement Jaxx had a good go at it too, taking it into the charts, and ultimately making it into the defining house style of the late ‘90s and into the 00s — pumped up still further by the glitterball Hed Kandi “glam house” boom. Think Stonebridge “Put Em High”, Booty Luv “Boogie 2Nite”, and any number of Crossover House tracks already mentioned. But it wasn’t all mainstream by any means — a tune like Paul Johnson’s “Get Get Down” could bridge the gap, while tracks like Sneak’s “U Can’t Hide From Your Dub” were 2000s underground staples, and Phil Weeks’s “The Grind” saw in a new decade. But New York had other key elements in the mix — most importantly hip hop and electro culture. Early on, Frankie Bones, Tommie Musto and Lenny Dee (yes, the hard techno/gabber Lenny Dee) trod the boundaries between electro, techno and house, often inspired by gritty warehouse raves. The Nu Groove label focused on deep, tough, mainly instrumental cuts from 1988 on, and a year later Strictly Rhythm was founded, bridging the soulful, deep, tough dubs that made up NYC’s vocabulary.
Tropical house went onto the top 40 on the UK singles Chart in 2015 with artists such as Kygo and Jonas Blue. In the mid-2010s, the influences of house began to also be seen in Korean K-pop music, examples of this being f(x)'s single "4 Walls" and SHINee's title track, "View". Due to the disco rage and technological advancements of record players, djs became more than just “disc jockey’s” but performance artists. Djs were also now able to speed up or slow down old disco records and could perform “marry-go-round” techniques where a dj would use two record players to live loop one section of a track djs thought were more danceable and appealing for the audience.
Even in the face of the pandemic, there have been many artists who continue to push the boundaries of their sound and further prove that these two dancefloor dominating genres will never go out of style. Disclosure is an English electronic music duo consisting of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence. They gained fame in the early 2010s with their debut album “Settle,” which included hit songs like “Latch” and “White Noise.” Disclosure has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Sam Smith, Lorde, and Khalid. His music mixes an old-school industrial feel, vocal samples only Green Velvet could find, and future-forward influences for a sound that is truly his own. Some of his popular songs include “Flash,” “La La Land,” “Answering Machine” and of course the forever timeless, “Percolator”. Writing some of the most influential house tracks in the 1980s, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk was a pioneer of both Chicago house and acid house.
It has spawned a swathe of sub-genres including tech house, acid house, deep house, electro house, and many more besides. For many, everything else is a distraction, and “soulful house” — disco influences, solid Chicago/NY drum programming, and churchy vocals right up front — is just house. From the very earliest work of Ten City on their 1989 hit “That’s the Way Love Is”, to Cajmere, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Masters At Work, Dave Lee (formerly Joey Negro) and CeCe Rogers on 1987’s “Someday”, soulful house been a constant in dance culture. Indeed, of all the strands of house, it’s probably changed the least, bounded by deep house on one side and pop crossover appeal on the other. Entering into a to-and-fro relationship in Britain with UK garage — and consistently maintaining some of the most racially mixed audiences in the process — it’s never been broken, so there’s no need to fix it.
